New Orleans Law Firm Gives $20k to Aid College-Bound Students
Barrasso Usdin Funding Scholarship at the New Orleans Science and Math School

NEW ORLEANS, LA (April 7, 2008)— Nationally-recognized New Orleans law firm, Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver, L.L.C., wins big again—this time, not in the courtroom—but for the students at the New Orleans Science and Math School, who will soon benefit from the firm’s donation of $20,000. This charter school is one of only a handful of specialty science and math schools in the country with an open admissions policy and with a majority of females and African American students.

“We are so grateful to Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver, L.L.C for their very generous gift of $20,000 to the Science and Math High School,” says Lee U. Hays, Executive Director of the Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education, “This donation will establish a charitable fund to provide scholarships for college entrance testing seminars, helping us to better prepare our students for college.”

This year, the scholarship fund will enable three students to participate in ACT and SAT test preparation seminars, which normally cost approximately $2550. The foundation believes that these seminars can offer the preparation and practice that students need to raise their scores to a 20, making them more competitive as college applicants. Plus, if the students stay in Louisiana, earning at 20 on the ACT will qualify them for T.O.P.S., a full-tuition scholarship at any state college or university.

“For us, it just makes sense to support the education of the future leaders and decision-makers in our city,” states Steve Usdin, managing partner at Barrasso Usdin, ”This fund is intended to help these very bright, committed students get the support they deserve.”

Reaching out to the city of New Orleans is a great passion for the lawyers at Barrasso Usdin. Aside from the donation to the Science and Math High School, the firm also partners with other local charitable organizations. Recently, Barrasso Usdin bought hundreds of CDs from the Tipitina’s Foundation to support local musicians. Additionally, they sponsored and helped build a Habitat for Humanity home in the Musicians’ Village, while also volunteering their time as counsel for individuals who are unable to afford attorneys.
