December 6, 2016

On November 5th, Stephen Kupperman was awarded the Judah Touro Society Award at the annual Touro Infirmary Gala.  Steve has been serving on the Touro Governing Board since 2000, and was chairman from 2005-2008.

"Stephen Kupperman receives Judah Touro Society Award

In the 165 years since it was founded, Touro Infirmary has seen many changes in New Orleans, and has overcome a number of obstacles and tragedies, including Hurricane Katrina.

Attorney Stephen Kupperman, who was the Touro Infirmary board chairman when the hurricane hit, helped with the evacuation and rode out the storm at the hospital with a team of doctors and staff, later evacuating any remaining patients. He also spearheaded the effort to reopen the hospital quickly after the storm, and for more than a year, Touro was the only hospital with an emergency room in city limits. He also devised a long-term business plan; one of the results is the opening of the Touro Infirmary Imaging Center.

For his contributions to Touro and the community, Kupperman, who is a founding partner of Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver, was bestowed the Judah Touro Society Award, named for the 19th-century philanthropist and founder of the hospital, at the Touro Infirmary Foundation Gala on Nov. 5."
